Slideshow: Travel in Winter: Mt. Everest to the Dead Sea

I knew winter, or I thought I did. I grew up in Minnesota, where winter is epic. I bundled up like a little Bibendum, the Michelin Tire Man, to march to school in near darkness in 20 below zero weather, making frequent stops to wipe the snot off my nose with my mitten. It giggled as I melted Crayolas on the steam radiator in my Kindergarten cloak room, creating runny designs that Dali could conceivably, but not likely, appreciate. That was winter to me, until I started to travel.

Since then, I have experienced winter in almost all levels of winter, from Mt. Everest to the Dead Sea.
