What Would Hopper Paint?

Posted on March 14, 2009

I wondered what American Realist painter Edward Hopper would paint if he were alive today. One possibility I came up with after horsing around with Photoshop:

    Hi Russ;

    Yep, it’s me, the wayward (not so much anymore)cowboy, now living in Portland. Had to comment on your Hopper post and image, which is probably not far from the truth. Hopper himself once told the story (you may already have read this) of his early days in Paris at the Ecole de Beaux Arts, when they were making the students spend endless hours in class doing realistic drawings of plaster copies of classical Greek and Roman sculpture. It didn’t take long before Hopper was completely stultified by this “pedestrian fare” as he put it, and left the school, never to return. “Hell,” said Hopper; “all I wanted to do was paint sunlight on the side of a building.” Which is exactly what he did; my guess is that he’d still be doing that today–it’s an endless subject, as are the late night eateries,coffee shops,gas stations and the like, maybe a little fancier now, where you can still find the same kinds of nighthawks and loners he loved to paint.I feel sure that Hopper would love your image.
