Those Unflappable Herons

Posted on May 9, 2007

The cleanup is underway in Stanley Park, a 1000-acre nature refuge near downtown Vancouver, BC, after it was ravaged by a wind storm last December. The hurricane-force winds mowed down trees as if they were stalks of wheat. I was there last week and by the looks of it, it will take a long time for the park to recover.

The restoration crews could take a lesson from the Great Blue Herons who have make the park their mating grounds. The winds knocked down a handful of nests but the latest reports say that about 170 are still there, many more than last year, and the chicks are hatching and peeping away. It is a great up-close nature exhibit, best with binoculars but you can stand under the trees and watch.
